"You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father.' (NLT)

What a bold statement, one that can be easily put to the test. Jesus says that anything you ask for in his name will be done. Unfortunately, this verse is often misinterpreted.

Many people read this verse and think that if they ask for something and simply say "in Jesus's name" then God he will give it to them, but we all know that isn't true. If I asked God for a million dollars in my bank account when I open it next and say "in Jesus's name", odds are low I will get it. This is because most people don't understand what Jesus was actually saying in this passage. Saying something in Jesus's name meant much more than simply providing an ending to a prayer. In biblical times, names weren't just what they called each other, names were an embodiment of who the person was. Name changes weren't uncommon during those days as, if the name reflects their character, then a change in character meant a change in name. God does this numerous times throughout the Bible, examples include changing Abram to Abraham, Jacob to Israel, and Saul to Paul.

Asking for something in Jesus's name means that we are asking for something is in line with his will and his desires. This means that, if what we asking for is to expand the Kingdom of Heaven, or to spread God's word, then it shall be done.

Jesus has promised that if we ask for something in his name then it will be done. This doesn't mean it will be done immediately though. God knows the perfect time to do it and, just because you don't see anything doesn't mean nothing happened. Jesus has promised that it will happen.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I thank you for this promise that you gave us. I thank you that we can ask you to help us spread God's word and that we aren't left to do it alone. I pray that you continue to guide our prayers and oir lives so that they are both more in line with your will. Amen.
